THINK BIG: Books On My Nightstand / The Sense of an Ending

As I am getting older and faced with life’s challenges, I realize that much of what I thought was important for my younger self  is rendered utterly irrelevant by the passing of time. Meanings shift and change. Tony Webster, a retired middle-aged divorcee and narrator of The Sense of an Ending , comes to a similar realization.
 

The Sense of an Ending by Julian Barnes is a compact, contemporary novel of only 150 pages, but jampacked with a skillfully plotted story about friendship, youth suicide, eros (sexual love) and thanatos (death), loss, affairs, pregnancy, remorse, the complexity of the human heart, the fragmentary nature of memory, the passage of time, and with a strong mystery at the core of it. "History is that certainty produced at the point where the imperfections of memory meet the inadequacies of documentation." p.59

A warning though, its effect can be disturbing, leaving you unsettled and frustrated once you reach the story’s ending. The enigmas, as well as the stunning psychological and emotional depth it offers sum up the pleasure of the book. No wonder it gained the reputation for being the book that you must read twice to search "sense" in a hazy "ending".

A rainy week ahead of us calls for more books on my nightstand. Here’s what’s on my October reading list:

The Goldfinch  by Donna Tartt

A lengthy novel that keeps me awake at nights. I challenge you to tackle its 864 gripping pages! However, if you are not up to the challenge, you could pickup Tartt’s other slightly shorter but equally acclaimed novel, The Secret History.

Gone Girl  by Gillian Flynn

Another mystery novel with plot twists and a grand finale that I am itching to discover before watching the movie, which has hit the big screen in Greece.

THINK PINK: Autumnal Beauty

Crisp autumnal weather calls for more and deeper color and therefore typically, around this time of the year, I go ever so slightly moodier with my makeup for a more dramatic look. 

I pull from my summer make-up bag Rimmel’s ScandalEyes (here) super-creamy eye shadow pencil in "Bad Bronze" and by smudging the warm, coppery hue along the lower and top lash lines, I create a two-dimensional smoky eye, instantly giving that bit of drama I need. If a stronger eye is more your cup of tea, use all over the lid the glimmering wash of  reddish-pink, "Coppering" eye shadow by Mac or place it strategically, like me, for a small pop of color to spark up your gaze without feeling severe.

"Victoria" (here), a deep cherry shade by Nails Inc, is my seductive, autumnal, go-to shade. An intense, oxblood hue that looks beautiful on the nails without being too vampy. I have to admit though moving towards the autumnal moody hues of  burgundies and berries on lips, can be intimidating as hell to me. So, this autumn I am going for a softer around the edges look by gently dabbing with my fingertips Maybelline’s gorgeous "Berry Much" (here) on my lips to get a berry stain effect. Although I like the opaqueness of Maybelline’s Color Drama (here) matte lip pencil, I tend to add some lip balm on top for a bit of sheen to make the look extra berry chic!

Talking about seasonal changes, I can see Miss Dior becoming my autumnal signature perfume. A rich, feminine floral scent with delicate notes of neroli and Damascus rose complimented with Indonesian patchouli is perfect for autumn.

Come on! Shelve your fears, take the plunge and embrace warm browns, plum purples and dusty roses, as the days turn moodier.

THINK YUMMY: Mama Roux: Daring to Be Different!

My brief trips to Athens are almost always chaotically fun. Carried away by the energy  of the city, I am usually on a tight schedule, jampacked with events, meetings, visits and family time. But this time, I managed to have a few hours for just MrA, myself and the city.

As MrA and I were walking down Aeolou St., we were caught in a summer rain and decided to find comfort in Mama Roux at No48.  It was the perfect spot for us to soak in the bustling Athenian life through its front window tables, while enjoying a delicious, ethnic-driven lunch in a laid back restaurant environment with an industrial feel and a lively mix of people - families, youngsters, hipsters, business people, as well as artsy intellectuals -. It was both fascinating and liberating to be able to choose from a colorful, multicultural menu integrating many different cultures’ contributions to the culinary world and enjoy our lunch with such a mixed crowd.

I went for the Middle Eastern Falafel for a starter, which was served alongside a salad and an amazing tahini-based sauce. For my main course, I chose the delicious Indian Tandoori Chicken souvlaki with juicy chicken marinated in Indian herbs, lemon and yogurt and served with chutney raita, rice and spicy Arabic pita, while people at the adjacent tables were enjoying American burgers and Mexican burritos. No doubt, Mama Roux is the place to push your limits and expand your horizons when ordering.

I wish I had the time for a cocktail at the restaurant’s bar area and more flavorful finds ...

THINK BIG: Instagram for Small Businesses: Useful Tips

I am a marketing chick and a social media enthusiast. I am also a strong believer that a picture is worth a thousand words, being constantly fascinated by creatives around me and inspired by their talent. So, I jumped on the Instagram bandwagon in order to be part of a global creative community, as well as to get my hands on a very powerful digital marketing tool.

A Few Tips from Me to You:

Choose Quality over Quantity

It's your virtual product portfolio on display and you want to present it in the best possible way. Patience people! Take multiple shots and share on Instagram your best quality, visually attractive pictures. Sometimes you even need to get painstakingly planned shots to make every image look as sleek as a fashion editorial.

Tell a Story

Use your pictures to tell a story that reflects your brand’s aesthetic. Showcase not only your product, but also its story behind it, like its making of, behind the scenes going-on at your store/office, street-style pictures, trends and materials, as the best inspiration comes from a mix of influencers. Make it interesting!

Craft Descriptions

Take your time to craft tempting and thoughtful image descriptions to make your feeds more searchable. In this case, hashtags are your best friends! Find out the popular ones (For example #love, #fun, #happy, #tbt, #summer) and apply them relevantly. I have made a list of them in Evernote, which I find it really useful for quick reference. Be careful though not to overdo it with hashtags, as it can come across that you are desperate for an audience and spammy, which can be damaging for your brand image.

Engage

Keep in mind that Instagram users love the sense of community the application brings. So , make sure that are nice and you share the love by replying to your followers’/potential customers’ comments, say thank you and “like” other photos.  You can also create your own hashtag and encourage your followers to use it. For example, my own hashtag, relevant to my blog is : #thinkpinkthinkbigmoments

Identify, acknowledge and encourage street-style figures, like bloggers, social media enthusiasts and other influencers to get engaged by posting about your product, which will enhance the story behind your brand. Then, re-purpose the images that were submitted to you by happy customers by sharing them to your other social media platforms, like Facebook, Twitter or Pinterest. For example, the Greek shoe manufacturer Pargiana features my Instagram pictures enjoying their shoes via Fecebook.
