Books on my Nightstand

There are so many books on my reading list right now that I can barely keep up with what I’ve written to my Evernote wish list. For the lazy days of this Easter holiday, I chose two books : the first person narrative by Nathan Filer, The Shock of the Fall and the quirky, utterly unique  story of  The Hundred-Year-Old Man Who Climbed Out of the Window and Disappeared by Jonas Jonasson, that would take me out of my reading comfort zone. Both books are bestsellers-page turners, with suspense and unexpected depths concealed (or not!) beneath the dark humour. I’m so glad I bought a copy of both, as I wouldn’t be able to appreciate their stunning cover design and embossed feel with an e-reader.

 

The Shock of the Fall by Nathan Filer: A novel that deals with fragile, often well hidden parts of life, mental illness (schizophrenia) and family grief. An emotional journey is bravely narrated and to my surprise is analysed without much sentimentality, but often treated with dark humour, by the patient – hero of the book. So vividly, he explains: "Mental illness turns people inwards. That’s what I reckon. It keeps us forever trapped by the pain of our own minds, in the same way that the pain of a broken leg or a cut thumb will grab your attention, holding it so tightly that your good leg or your good thumb seem to cease to exist." p. 277

Despite the fact that the main event of the story is revealed in the first chapter of the book, "I’ll tell you what happened because it will be a good way to introduce my brother. His name’s is Simon. I think you are going to like him. I really do. But in a couple of pages he’ll be dead. And he was never the same after that." p.5, there was an underlying suspense throughout that kept me turning the pages and refused to let it go until I had finished it. I believe it’s a groundbreaking story that well deserves to be shared with other readers!

I am half-way through The Hundred-Year-Old Man Who Climbed Out of the Window and Disappeared and I will report back next month.

Back to the Basics

Maybe it’s all this time that I am spending at home that has me relying on wardrobe basics. Lately, I am all about effortless outfits even during the work week; like a grey t-shirt and a pair of boyfriend jeans. I love basics because they are like a blank canvas. They can be worn in so many ways for all day long spring looks.  As you can see below, I pair them with killer heels as well as bold accessories and instantly take my outfit from casual to sophisticated.

Ίσως  επειδή περνάω αρκετές ώρες στο σπίτι, τον τελευταίο καιρό βασίζομαι κυρίως σε μερικά βασικά κομμάτια - πασπαρτού της γκαρνταρόμπας μου. Αναζητώ ευκολοφόρετα σύνολα ακόμα και τις καθημερινές; όπως ένα γκρι t-shirt και ένα ζευγάρι boyfriend jeans. Αγαπώ τα βασικά, κομμάτια – κλειδιά γιατί είναι σαν ένας λευκός καμβάς. Μπορούν να φορεθούν με πολλούς διαφορετικούς τρόπους για ανοιξιάτικες εμφανίσεις από το πρωί μέχρι το βράδυ. Ρίξε μία ματιά παρακάτω. Τα συνδυάζω με sexy ψηλοτάκουνα και υπερμεγέθη αξεσουάρ και καταφέρνω να αναβαθμίσω ακόμα και την πιο απλή εμφάνιση.

Spring Basics Two Ways 

A pair of light blue boyfriend jeans that show a bit of skin with a v neck t-shirt that elongates the neck, are key spring wardrobe pieces that can be worn for many different occasions. Spring in Greece is all about layering. Since it is still chilly in the mornings, I always have with me my favourite long sleeved button up denim shirt that I keep unbuttoned over my t-shirt adding layers of dainty jewellery, along with a pair of casual espadrilles, that add a boho element to the outfit.

For a meeting or a drink in the evening, I turn to my fun, girly, elegant cropped jacket adding a strong statement necklace along with a pair of killer heels.  I full tuck my t-shirt in my jeans for a more refined look, while my yellow belt brings the outfit together. My big shopper bag is the perfect companion for a casual yet polished look. Finally, I grab my sunglasses and my tablet case and I am good to go!

Ένα ζευγάρι ανοιχτόχρωμα μπλε boyfriend jeans, που αφήνουν λίγη σάρκα ακάλυπτη με ένα v neck t-shirt, που αναδεικνύει τον λαιμό μου, αποτελούν βασικά, κομμάτια-κλειδιά της ανοιξιάτικης γκαρνταρόμπας μου, καθώς μπορούν να φορεθούν  σε πολλές, διαφορετικές περιστάσεις. Ο ανοιξιάτικος καιρός της Ελλάδας προστάζει layering (στρώματα ρούχων). Επειδή κάνει ψύχρα τα πρωινά, έχω πάντα μαζί μου το αγαπημένο μου μακρυμάνικο denim πουκάμισο, που το φοράω ανοιχτό πάνω από το t-shirt, ενώ προσθέτω στρώσεις από ντελικάτα κολιέ και ένα ζευγάρι άνετες εσπαντρίγιες, οι οποίες προσδίδουν boho στοιχεία στην εμφάνισή μου.

Για ένα επαγγελματικό ραντεβού ή βραδινό ποτό, επιλέγω ένα χαρούμενο, κοριτσίστικό και συνάμα κομψό cropped jacket, ενώ προσθέτω ένα statement κολιέ και ένα ζευγάρι ψηλές γόβες για να σταθώ στο ύψος των περιστάσεων. Προσέχω να έχω το t-shirt καλά ταχτοποιημένο μέσα στο παντελόνι μου για μία πιο προσεγμένη, εκλεπτυσμένη εμφάνιση, ενώ η κίτρινη ζώνη απογειώνει το στυλ μου. Μία μεγάλη shopper τσάντα είναι η ιδανική συνοδός για όλη μέρα. Τέλος, δεν ξεχνώ τα γυαλιά μου για τον ήλιο και τη θήκη για το tablet και έφυγα!

Girl on a Budget

KIKO changed my gloss game!

I was in a bad mood. It was one of those cold, winter weekends that left me feeling nothing could make me happy. My friend was already in Italy, while I was killing my time on the internet. Η φίλη μου ήταν ήδη στην Ιταλία, ενώ εγώ σκότωνα την ώρα μου στο διαδίκτυο. Τότε ανακάλυψα την οικονομική, αλλά όχι "φθηνή" Ιταλική εταιρία KIKO Make Up Milano και αμέσως έστειλα μήνυμα στη Φανή να μου αγοράσει ένα ζουμερό ροζ κραγιόν, αποτυπώνοντας έτσι τις ελπίδες μου για την έναρξη μίας νέας, πιο κεφάτης και γλυκιάς εποχής που ξεχειλίζει από χρώμα.
